Best Over/Under Shotguns of 2024

It's that time of year again when we countdown our top picks of over-under shotguns! Every year, we get our hands on more shotguns to review, and the more shotguns we shoot, the more experience we gain. With that, we update this list every year to reflect what we believe to be the best shotguns on the market. Since we only speak to what we know, this list only includes shotguns that we've reviewed! Keeping track of all these guns can be challenging, so we use the Shotgun Finder tool to help us make this video.

We decided to rank guns within four categories this year: Best for trap, best for sporting clays, best for all-purpose/general shooting, and best for upland hunting. Each category has three subcategories: Best on a budget, best value (The value ratio based on our Shotgun Finder Scoring system), and best overall. This is our favorite gun, regardless of price. We spend a lot of time testing and scoring these shotguns. But at the end of the day, this list is just our opinion, so feel free to disagree! Let's get into it!

If you have opinions about any of our picks,  let us know your thoughts on the TFL COMMUNITY!

Trap Shotguns

Best on a Budget: CZ All-American Single

The CZ All-American Single stands out as an entry-level trap gun, priced at around $1,300 MSRP. With a single barrel and good adjustability, it’s ideal for singles or handicap. We found the gun to shoot nicely, though the recoil was a bit much. It’s a great starter trap gun with features that punch above its price point.

Best Value: Browning BT-99 and SKB 90-TSS

  • Browning BT-99: A legendary single-barrel trap gun, the BT-99 has been a staple in the trap shooting community for decades. The base model, priced at $1,679, offers excellent reliability. Many different BT-99 options offer adjustability and nicer finishes as well.

  • SKB 90-TSS: For shooters wanting two barrels, the SKB 90-TSS provides a reliable, no-frills option at just over $2,000. It’s highly adjustable and delivers solid performance, though it doesn’t win any awards for beauty. Still, it’s a dependable workhorse for dedicated trap shooters.

Best Overall: Fabarm Elos N2 Allsport Type T XL

You know what they say: The longer the name, the better the gun... This seems to be true with the Elos N2. With an unsingle and over-under barrel combo and quick-release rib system, this shotgun can adapt for various disciplines beyond trap. Its ergonomics and looks are top-notch. We loved shooting this shotgun!

Sporting Clay Shotguns

Best on a Budget: Weatherby Orion Sporting

At $1,149 MSRP, the Weatherby Orion Sporting offers incredible value. This over-under features an adjustable comb, making it suitable for various shooters entering the sporting clays world. While it’s not flashy, it performs good and shoots reliably.

Best Value: Rizzini BR110 Sporter

The Rizzini BR110 Sporter IPS blew us away during our review. The IPS version (with adjustable comb and rib) is $4,195, but the non-adjustable base model version is $2,780. For those wanting a middle ground, the BR110 X is $3,250. This shotgun clearly stands out in the value category.

  • Honorable Mentions:

    • Browning Citori 725 Sporting: Starting at $3,069, this gun features adjustable trigger shoes and length-of-pull options. We tested the 725 in 28 gauge and it shot like a dream.

Best Overall: Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting

The Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting, priced at $4,975, was an obvious choice for us. From its exceptional balance to its crisp trigger, every aspect of this shotgun screams quality. We had a fantastic experience overall with the Summit.

  • Honorable Mentions:

    • Beretta 694 Pro Sporting TSK: A strong contender with a $5,000 price tag. We love the adjustability and balance but slightly prefer the feel of the Summit Sporting. The TSK also had much more recoil than we'd like to see.

All-Purpose Shotguns

Best on a Budget: Mossberg Silver Reserve Field

At $820, the Mossberg Silver Reserve Field is an excellent entry-level over-under that can cover all bases. While it doesn’t boast luxury materials or the smoothest trigger, it’s dependable for occasional use across different shooting activities. Its lightweight design is great for hunting, though the recoil can be noticeable during extended clay shooting.

Best Value: Weatherby Orion

We reviewed this shotgun almost four years ago and it has consistently impressed us since then. It's not the prettiest shotgun out there but its a reliable workhorse that gets the job done.

Best Overall: Benelli 828U Steel Field

The Benelli 828U Steel Field is a new favorite of ours. We reviewed the original 828U that came standard with an aluminum receiver and liked it a lot. The one gripe we had was with the recoil. The new steel 828U solves the recoil issue as the overall gun weight is heavier. This is a very unique and innovative O/U shotgun. A huge upside of this shotgun is the ability to use shims to adjust your stock dimensions. This is very unique for an O/U shotgun and earned it our top spot.

Upland Hunting Shotguns

Best on a Budget: CZ Sharptail & Mossberg Gold Reserve

  • CZ Sharptail (Side-by-Side): At $1,099, the Sharptail delivers solid performance and aesthetics. It’s a great entry-level side-by-side for upland hunters.

  • Mossberg Gold Reserve (Over-Under): Another budget-friendly option at $1,099, the Gold Reserve is reliable and functional, if not particularly flashy. It’s lightweight and well-suited for long days in the field.

Best Value: Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon

The Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon, starting at $2,549, is a classic upland shotgun. It’s lightweight, well-balanced, and offers excellent handling. While the auto safety feature can be annoying, its performance is hard to beat.

  • Honorable Mentions:

    • Franchi Instinct: Priced at $2,399, this over-under combines good looks with reliable performance. It’s a great option for hunters wanting a premium feel without breaking the bank.

  •        Browning Citori Hunter: Another solid choice at $2,100. It’s not overly fancy but delivers dependable performance.

Best Overall: Upland Gun Company Venus

The Upland Gun Company Venus takes the crown in this category. Starting at $3,500, this side-by-side is fully customizable, from wood blanks to stock dimensions. Manufactured by RFM in Italy, Upland Gun Company delivers unmatched fit, performance, and shooting vibes. It cant get better than a custom fit shotgun.

  • Honorable Mentions:

    • Benelli 828U Steel Field: If you're not willing to go through the work of a custom fitting, then we'd have to put the 828U as an alternate in this category as well.
