Why 8,000 Youth with Guns is a Good Idea

Imagine an event where 8,000 students gather, each equipped with a shotgun, collectively firing nearly a million rounds of ammunition over 9 days. Welcome to the Minnesota State High School Trap Shooting Championship. Some might think this is a recipe for disaster, while others see it as a celebration, filled with skilled competition and camaraderie. One thing is certain: This annual event is a significant highlight for all participants.

Overview

A lot of people out there get uneasy when the topic of high schools incorporating shooting sports comes up. There's a lot of negative media out there about firearms, especially around kids and firearms. This event has both of those things - and in large numbers. Our goal of attending this event was to highlight the positive aspects of youth shooting sports and to show that firearms are nothing to fear

Safety First

We spoke to John Nelson, President of the USA Clay Target League. He reminded us that in the entire history of the league, there hasn't been a single death, concussion, or reported injury. This is simply amazing especially when you consider how many football concussions we hear about year after year. He says "Everyone is singing from the same hymnal when it comes to the firearm safety practices". Meaning that these students' parents, and coaches are doing their job well by instilling good gun safety practices above all else.

Building Character and Community

Trap shooting is more than just a sport; it’s a community builder. It brings together boys and girls, hunters and non-hunters, athletes, and academic achievers. Students from different backgrounds and grades come together, fostering friendships that might not have formed otherwise. The inclusivity and diversity of the sport are evident as some competing shooters are starting out as young as 6th grade. They're able to receive mentorship from the older shooters with some forming life-long bonds.

The impact of trap shooting on personal development is significant. Older students mentor the younger ones, teaching them not just shooting skills but also leadership and teamwork. This mentorship and camaraderie are evident in the way squads support each other, celebrate successes, and grow together over the years.

Fun and Focus

Despite the emphasis on safety and skill, the overwhelming sentiment among the participants is that trap shooting is fun. Students describe the sport as exhilarating, challenging, and a mental game requiring focus and a positive mindset. The excitement and energy are palpable throughout the nine-day event, with students celebrating each other's achievements and pushing each other to excel.

A Bright Future

The future of high school trap shooting and clay target sports looks promising. With over 50,000 student-athletes nationwide and growing interest at the high school, college, and homeschool levels, the sport is one of the fastest-growing in the country. Events like the Minnesota State High School Trap Shooting Championship showcase the positive aspects of responsible firearm use and the strong community it builds.

In conclusion, the Minnesota State High School Trap Shooting Championship is more than just a competition; it’s a testament to the positive impact of shooting sports on youth. It promotes safety, builds character, and fosters a sense of community, proving that firearms, when used responsibly, are nothing to fear. As we look to the future, these young athletes give us hope for a strong and united community.
