Ergonomics
- The ergonomics of this turkey gun are very similar to the previous Mossberg turkey/940's we've reviewed.
- If you're familiar with Mossberg shotguns, you know that they keep it pretty classy with minimal changes over the years to their shotguns. One minor but fantastic update on this 940 is the safety. It's still the famous Mossberg top-tang style, but the new safety is much easier to toggle.
- As we said - This is a simple (yet classy) budget shotgun. It's a basic build with a Mossy Oak camo.
- The first thing we noticed in the hands is that this shotgun is pretty well balanced relative to the size of the barrel. The gas components in the forend help with this.
- One thing we appreciate about these Mossberg's is that they come with a decent recoil pad. Most manufacturers utilize the cheapest option for their pads.
- The 940 has a flat vented rib with an interchangeable fiber on front.
- This turkey shotgun shares the same controls as a standard 940 (which we love) All the control points are over-sized and very ergonomic to use.
- The trigger guard has a charge indicator. This is simply a pin that pops out to visibly indicate that the gun is cocked and ready to go.
- This 940 has a very nice loading port. It is milled out for ease of loading. There is also a red/orange mag-tube follower that indicates when the tube is empty.
- The 940 has great ergonomics. It is a very functional gun with many details coming together to make it a very smooth and enjoyable shooting experience.
- This shotgun is completely polymer making it very durable. The forend and pistol grip have an aggressive pattern to make gripping the polymer much easier.
- This 940 comes with stud mounts for a sling.
-
Recoil and Reliability
- If you've seen our other 940 related content, you know that this shotgun handles recoil very well. The 940's gas system is top notch when it comes to recoil and reliability.
- From our extensive experience with Mossberg shotguns, I can assure that this shotgun is reliable. If you can speak to the reliability of a 940, please let us know how it's held up on the TFL COMMUNITY!
- As part of our reliability test, we took a quick shot at our pattern plate. At first this 940 shot a bit high, but with the luxury of a red-dot, we can easily adjust where this shotgun will shoot. It is important to pattern your shotgun!
- To test out the recoil we shot our favorite turkey load: Federal TSS. This stuff is next level. It may deliver a bit more punch, but it certainly gets the job done. We'd recommend using a Falcon Strike to mitigate this added recoil.
-
Breakdown/Quality of Build
- The disassembly is very similar to the standard Mossberg 940. Reference our Mossberg 940 review to see more about the internals. (WATCH HERE)
- Mossberg claims that you can run 1,500 rounds between cleanings without failure. We've experienced more than that without issue.
- The gas components are coated in Boron Nitrite. This essentially keeps all the moving pieces moving smoothly.
- There are a lot of moving pieces, but together they make for one of the best, fastest, and reliable gas systems on the market.
- Mossberg has been making shotguns for a very long time and knows how to do it well. These shotguns are made to last as long as you treat them right.
- We have no reason to believe that this shotgun won't hold up over time if properly cared for. Very solid.
-
Shooting Experience with the 940 Pro Turkey
- What we can tell you from our extensive Mossberg experience is that the 940 pro is reliable (if you didn't catch that already)
- We use this shotgun to perform live exhibitions and pull off crazy trick shots. To do this requires a shotgun that we know is going to work, and cycle very fast. The 940 Pro hasn't let us down yet!
If you're a turkey hunter and prefer a semi-auto shotgun, then the 940 Pro Turkey is definitely worth checking out. Our experience has been very positive with the 940. We can't wait to get another turkey with this shotgun!
